The checklist
A child is generally a fit for GAPP when all of these are true:
- Under 21. Services can continue until the 21st birthday.
- Lives in Georgia and has Georgia Medicaid. Any Medicaid category counts, including Katie Beckett.
- Medically fragile, meaning they need the level of care a hospital or nursing facility would provide.
- Needs medically necessary skilled nursing, personal care support, or both.
- Has a doctor ordering the care. Every GAPP service must be backed by a physician's order.
- Has caregivers at home who know how to care for the child. GAPP adds help; it doesn't replace the family.
What "medically fragile" means
It's about the care your child needs each day, not the name of the diagnosis. Families commonly look into GAPP when a child:
- has a tracheostomy or uses a ventilator or oxygen
- is fed through a G-tube, J-tube or similar
- has frequent or hard-to-control seizures
- has complex heart, lung or neurological conditions
- needs hands-on help with daily living because of a physical or medical condition
These are examples, not a list that guarantees approval. The medical review team looks at your child's records and the care the doctor orders.
Ages and what changes
| Age | GAPP | Getting Medicaid |
|---|---|---|
| Birth to 18 | Eligible | Regular Medicaid or SSI if income allows. If not, Katie Beckett. |
| 19 and 20 | Eligible | Katie Beckett ends the month your child turns 19. Many young adults keep Medicaid another way, such as through SSI, where only their own income counts. |
| 21 | GAPP ends | Plan early for adult programs. Ask your care team, or send us a message, about Georgia's adult waiver programs. |
What it costs
When GAPP is approved, Georgia Medicaid pays the nursing agency directly for the approved hours. Families usually pay nothing for those services.
If your child also has private insurance, keep it. Medicaid pays after other insurance, and Katie Beckett reviews take your coverage into account.
Questions
Does a specific diagnosis qualify my child for GAPP?
No diagnosis qualifies on its own. GAPP looks at your child's daily care needs and whether they need nursing-level care that is medically necessary.
Can my child get GAPP after age 18?
Yes, GAPP runs until the 21st birthday. Katie Beckett ends the month a child turns 19, so older teens need to keep Medicaid another way. See turning 19.
Do we have to pay anything?
Usually no. Medicaid pays the agency directly for approved hours. Children in Georgia Medicaid through Katie Beckett have no premium or patient liability.
